Why be a member of Suicide Prevention Australia?
Suicide Prevention Australia (SPA) is a unique not-for-profit organisation. As our vision states, “we facilitate collaboration and continuing improvement in suicide prevention”. We do this impartially and strive to represent as many possible voices from the wide range of professionals and volunteers that are working across Australia to prevent suicide. This includes, but is not limited to, researchers, practitioners, policy makers, those with lived experience, service providers, government, and the community.
Projecting a strong and positive vision, SPA advocates for an effective and relevant national policy framework, a sound baseline of disease and disability caused by suicide and self-harm, and investment in evidence based and sustainable programs. In doing so, SPA is a strong national voice, advocating on behalf of those affected by suicide and self-harm and those working to prevent and/or respond to suicide and self-harm in the Australian community.
SPA’s members play a vital role in fulfilling this key advocacy role, and help ensure representation of the diverse experiences and views of Australians. All SPA Members add their voice to our organisation and help strengthen our response to suicide prevention and postvention.
As an SPA member, individuals may nominate to stand for the SPA Board. SPA also encourages its members to become involved with the organisation through participation in either portfolio committees (such as our active Communications Portfolio Committee), reference groups, and planning groups for our events.
Additional benefits of membership include:
- Invitation to attend SPA Forums including the Annual Member Forum (AMF). The AMF will provides a forum for members to hear contributions from invited experts, participate in debates, present new ideas and assist in determining SPA policy and priorities.
- The opportunity to nominate for task specific SPA Working Groups. These Working Groups will be established by the SPA Board to address priority policy issues and projects, including important national events. Participation in Working Groups will allow you to contribute your expertise to the organisations activities.
- Direct involvement in the development of SPA Position Statements.
- Access to online forums which encourage sharing of ideas and participation in debate.
- The chance to network, both online and at SPA events, with a broad range of people, engaged in suicide prevention.
- Discounted rates for all SPA events that carry a delegate fee.
- Quarterly e-newsletter with updates on SPA’s activities and sector developments
- Receive a copy of the SPA Annual Report and attend the Annual General Meeting.
Whether you are an individual or an organisation, joining as a member of SPA provides plenty of opportunity to have your say in how you deem suicide prevention strategies should be implemented. Your membership also enhances SPA’s capacity to achieve its mission in Australia.
