Mental Illness

Association of Relatives and Friends of the Mentally Ill (ARAFMI)

ARAFMI focuses on the provision of support for families, carers and friends with mental health issues. This is based on the principles of mutual self help and support to build the capacity of families and improve their quality of life. ARAFMI offers mutual support groups, information, library, telephone support and home-based outreach support. Services are provided through State-based offices.

Beyondblue

beyondblue provides information for carers, health professionals and people with depression, anxiety and related substance misuse disorders. It provides a helpline, searchable database of General Practitioners and Clinical Psychologists, self-assessment tools, research news, grants, fact sheets, and a media centre.

Black Dog Institute

The Black Dog Institute is an educational, research, clinical and community-oriented facility dedicated to improving the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of mood disorders. The website includes information about how to get help, self-assessment tools and factsheets, research, and a media centre.

CLAN WA

CLAN WA operates the "indigo project" to provide support to individuals and families affected by mental illness by offering counselling. The Brain Ambulance offers free workshops including Mental Health First Aid and suicide and self-harm at the Armadale branch.

depressionNet

depressioNet is a not-for-profit organisation that offers a unique e-interactive human service for people impacted by mild to moderate depression, integrating professional and peer support services.

GROW

GROW is a community of persons working towards mental health through mutual help and a 12 step program of recovery. Small groups of people who have experienced depression, anxiety or other mental or emotional distress, come together on a weekly basis to help each other deal with the challenges of life. The Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia Incorporated is a not-for-profit, grassroots, self-help, support and advocacy organisation of people with serious mental illnesses, their families and friends. Such illnesses include schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorders and anxiety disorders. MoodGYM

MoodGYM is a free, fun, interactive program which provides information about depression and anxiety. It was developed by the Centre for Mental Health Research (CMHR) at the Australian National University.

SANE Australia

SANE Australia provides information about mental illness, suicide prevention and where to get help. SANE’s national Freecall Helpline provides information and advice about symptoms, treatment and support services 1800 18 SANE (7263). They also offer online help. The website includes factsheets, an online bookshop, media releases and advice for media, research bulletins, and information on SANE’s advocacy and awareness campaigns.
