Crisis Support

Australian Suicide Prevention Foundation

The Australian Suicide Prevention Foundation is focussed on providing help for those considering suicide and for their friends and relatives affected by such an event. The organisation's basic message is “you’d never tell a friend to die; tell yourself what you’d tell a friend”. The ASPF runs a nationwide dial-in recorded telephone message service (1800 HOLDON) aimed at giving medical information, comfort, direction, an opportunity to reflect and an alternative to the person making the call.

Crisis Support Services Inc.

Crisis Support Services Inc operates Suicide Helpline Victoria (1300 651 251), Mensline Australia (1300 78 99 78) and the Suicide Callback Service (1300 659 467) (links available to each service in listing below). Crisis Support Services manage LIFE Communications, a project of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy, on behalf of the Department of Health and Ageing.

GP Psych Support

The GP Psych Support service provides GPs with patient management advice from psychiatrists. Visit the website or call 1800 200 588 (available 24 hours, 7 days).

Kids Help Line

Kids Help Line (1800 55 1800) is a free, confidential and anonymous, telephone and online counselling service specifically for young people aged between 5 and 25.

Lifeline

Lifeline provides a 24-hour telephone counselling service for those seeking support. Additionally, a specific Suicide Crisis Support Program, targeted at individuals in crisis, is offered through a number of the Lifeline centres. Support is available to those bereaved by suicide via information booklets, web links and suicide bereavement support groups. Lifeline’s suicide prevention arm, LivingWorks, offers a number of training programs focused on suicide prevention and awareness.

MensLine Australia

Mensline Australia is a dedicated service for men with relationship and family concerns. Call the help line on 1300 78 99 78, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The website offers a range of self-help tips, resources and online forum. Specific sites are available for young men, Indigenous men, Arabic and Vietnamese.

Parakaleo

Parakaleo is a retreat centre focused on providing support to people who are struggling with suicide or suicidal thoughts, or family members affected by suicide or suicidal behaviour. They also offer services for industry and a range of workshops and training courses including LivingWorks ASIST and SuicideTalk training. Parakaleo is based in North West Tasmania and operates throughout Tasmania.

Parentline NSW

Parentline is a confidential telephone counselling service providing professional counselling and support for parents and care-givers living in NSW. Available 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday on 13 20 55.

Parentline Qld & NT

Parentline is a confidential telephone counselling service providing professional counselling and support for parents and care-givers living in Qld & NT Available 8am to 10pm, 7 days, on 1300 30 1300.

Parentline SA

Parentline is a confidential telephone counselling service providing professional counselling and support for parents and care-givers living in SA. Available 24 hours, 7 days, on 1300 364 100.

Suicide Call Back Service

The Suicide Call Back Service is a free nation-wide telephone support service for those at risk of suicide (including those who have been discharged from a hospital following a suicide attempt), their carers and those bereaved by suicide. They offer up to six 50 minute telephoned counselling sessions, scheduled to suit you. Call the Referral line on 1300 659 467 to access this service. The Suicide Call Back Service is operated by Crisis Support Services Inc.

SuicideLine (Victoria)

SuicideLine (Victoria) is a confidential telephone counselling, support and referral service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout Victoria for the cost of a local call (1300 651 251).

The Samaritans

The Samaritans provide a confidential telephone counselling, support and referral service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in Western Australia. The website provides information on risk factors, warning signs, and information for parents of depressed and suicidal teenagers.

Toughin’ It Out, Kirinaran Publishing

Toughin' It Out offers a pamphlet which outlines survival skills for dealing with suicidal thoughts and exposes the way that suicidal thoughts work. It offers strategies to control the thoughts and helps the person at risk to arrange their environment to diminish the likelihood of self-harm.
