Why support SPA?
This year alone, around 2000 Australians will take their own life. They will leave behind grieving loved ones, unanswered questions and unfounded guilt.
Suicide Prevention Australia (SPA) is committed to preventing this senseless loss of life, and you too can help to save lives by supporting our work. Our Association is the only national umbrella body active in suicide prevention throughout Australia.
There are no easy solutions to tackling suicide prevention, which is why our Association works on many levels throughout the community: through community awareness and advocacy; by collaborating with practitioners, researchers, community agencies and those touched by suicide; sharing and providing access to critical information; lobbying government and other agencies about improving suicide prevention strategies; and by hosting local, regional and national forums, conferences and events.
Everything we do at SPA is focussed on reducing suicide, supporting those who are bereaved by suicide and improving our ability as a community to respond to those at-risk of suicide. Right now, we need your help more than ever! Please read the information below to find out the various ways by which you can support SPA. Your support will help us to provide services, programs and public events that could save lives and will bring comfort to those bereaved by suicide.
Before you decide if you are in a position to support SPA, consider these facts:
- Australia has one of the highest rates of suicide in the developed world;
- Statistically, men are four times more like to take their own life than women;
- Many people bereaved by the suicide of a loved one are themselves at-risk of suicidal ideation;
- Suicide prevention strategies of the recent past prove that preventative strategies work! (The rate of youth suicide in Australia have declined in the wake of the efforts of the National Youth Suicide Strategy)
Please, help prevent suicide and help us spread the word about suicide prevention by offering your support to SPA.
Thank you
Dr Michael Dudley
